Suzan Frecon Paintings
at Lawrence Markey
March 17 – April 28, 2001
Lawrence Markey Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of recent paintings by Suzan Frecon.
John Yau writes of Frecon’s work*:
Suzan Frecon’s attention to materials is (also) evident in her paintings, where the relatively smooth but not obsessively finished surface may shift from matte to shiny. The edges of the struc–tures are handmade, and not the result of masking tape. Frecon is neither trying to eliminate the hand nor trying to fetishize it. Rather than making either gestural or mechanical means be a central aspect of her painting, she shifts our focus to the composition, the interaction of both solid areas of color and handmade, geometric forms.
Suzan Frecon’s oil paintings and watercolors were included in the 2000 Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and will be the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Drawing Center’s Drawing Room, in January 2002.
